Emotional eating?

Do you know exactly why you are eating?

Are you eating because you are hungry? I mean really hungry? Or don’t you know what “hungry” means anymore? You start eating before the moment your stomach becomes restless? Why are you eating when you do? Are you eating when you are upset or angry? Do you need food then to calm down? Are you eating when you are sad? Which food are you craving for then? Is it giving you the comfort you were longing for without realizing? Do you feel like sighing after that first bite because it is bringing you in a sweet rush? Finding out why you eat what when is the key to set yourself free from emotional eating. Keep a diary for a week and a lot of triggering emotions will become clear to you.

We are brought up with candies and sweets. When we cried, we got a candy to make us feel better. The doctor gave us a candy when we were ‘good’. We got a sugar when we felt a bit sad or sick in the car. We were rewarded with a cookie when we were silent during a visit. We got an ice cream so we wouldn’t run off all the time during a walk. No wonder we keep using these kinds of foods when we feel bad.

When were we allowed to feel what we were feeling? We are often taught to not allow feelings in our early childhood and how to comfort ourselves with food. This behavior stays with us until we can unmask it and become aware of the system behind it. We are taught to stuff our emotions with food so it isn’t that surprising that we get trapped in an evolving pattern.

During a transition from a standard diet to raw food, you are adding more and more greens and leaving out all the comfort food that has to make you feel better. You aren’t realizing right away that you need that food to feel good. But what is ‘good’?  Does it feel good that you are looking for chocolate in your cupboards until you find some? Or that you are jumping in your car to get ice cream in a night shop?

When you eat raw you can’t hide behind food anymore. This is why a detox also affects and opens up your emotions. You can’t stuff your emotions with loads of chocolate, popcorn, chips or big buckets of ice cream. What happens is that you will now feel them instead of eating them away. That can be painful yes. But this is only temporarily.
